Ignition Key
Ignition key is used to start the car, quite obviously :)
Ignition key is used in vehicles to turn the ignition switch that connects the battery to the ignition system and other electrical devices.
There are different types or designs of ignition keys, which can perform multiple functions other than just using for starting the engine.

Ignition Switch
Ignition switch is the place where ignition key is inserted to start the vehicle.
But, it has more functions than simply starting the vehicle.
A basic ignition has 4 positions.
- Lock
- Accessory
- ON
- Start
Lock
Ignition key can be removed only from Lock position. This is to prevent the steering getting locked if the driver switches off the engine while vehicle is running (like in downhills, or accidental turning off the key)
At this position,
- All the engine electrical connections are disabled.
- Steering lock is enabled.
- If vehicle is fitted with Immobilizer or any anti-theft system, these will be active even at Lock position.
- Indicators / park light can be turned on.
- Some manufacturers allow entertainment systems to be switched on at Lock position also.
Accessory
This position allows vehicle electrical accessories such as blower fan, headlight, power window, sun-roof, to be On. This is mainly for passenger convenience. But prolonged use of any of these will drain the battery.
ON
When the switch is turned to the "On" position all lamps on the instrument panel will illuminate. This is called lamp self-test, just to test the operation of the lamps, whether working correctly or not.
Start
The "Start" position activates the starter motor, which enables the engine to crank and start the engine.Immobilizer
